Scaling Up local food in Kingston and Countryside Project of the NFU New Farm Project

 

National Farmers Union Local 316 is pleased to present the final report of the Plan to Grow action research project, funded through our NFU New Farm Project.
 
In this report, you will find priorities identified by a wide range of people interested in a more sustainable food and farm system in this area -- farmers, processors, distributors, restaurateurs, food security advocates, and eaters. We encourage you to use this report as a starting point for conversations, goal-setting and actions aimed at developing our local food and farm economy, and we welcome feedback on the ideas included in the report. The New Farm Project has organized a meeting to explore using the academic resources available to us locally to develop unique engineering ideas that have application to local food production in small and medium size farm enterprises.  In particular we have a local engineer who has volunteered to assist us in fleshing out those ideas and directing us toward resources in the academic community. 
 
The first meeting will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday January 19, 2012. Meeting location will be Burt's Greenhouses, 539 Maple Road, Odessa. If you would like to attend please contact Brian Burt; brian@burtsgh.com; 613-386-3426.

NFU New Farm Project

The National Farmers Union, Local 316 is excited to announce the beginning of another farmer-initiated project aimed at building a sustainable local food system in Kingston and its countryside.

The NFU New Farm Project is a farmer education, training, and support program aimed at strengthening the region’s farm community and local food system. By engaging new and established farmers in the opportunities and benefits that come from producing food for local markets, the project aims to increase the viability of family farms and build the supply of local farm products for local eaters.

The NFU New Farm Project is a four-year project with major funding by Heifer International, a non-profit organization whose goal is to help end world hunger and poverty through self-reliance & sustainability. Visit the NFU New Farm Project home page.
 

Food Down the Road

Food Down the Road was initiated by the farmers and eaters of the National Farmers Union, Local 316 in December 2006.  NFU Local 316 has a long history of successful advocacy work in Frontenac, Lennox &Addington counties and the City of Kingston.

Through visioning, researching, educating, advocating and partnership building, Food Down the Road is a vibrant community movement building a more vital and sustainable local food system. Visit the Food Down the Road website.

Local 316 has prepared a number of up-to-date resources on food and farm issues, which are available online. These include

  • From the Ground Up: A Primer for Community Action on Kingston and Countryside's Food System. This primer helps to build common ground on local food by informing people about challenges and opportunities facing Kingston and countryside’s food system. 74 pages.
  • The Local Harvest Newspaper. Issues of the Local Harvest newspaper are available online.
  • Sharing Food Down the Road.This booklet is our way of sharing what Food Down the Road (FDTR) is, how far we have made it on the road towards a sustainable local food system for Kingston and countryside, and ways to get involved with us! The booklet is 56 pages long and can be downloaded as a PDF.
