In a matter of weeks a new Coordinator will be taking over the reins of the National Farmers Union in Ontario.  After 3 and half years I have decided to step down from my elected position.  Over the next several weeks I plan to provide some reflective commentary on the state of Canada’s family farmers and our food system.

There is something desperately ironic about the situation where one government agency goes overboard with a regulatory regime that seemingly has nothing to do with actual food safety but that imposes enormous costs on local small abattoirs and butcher shops while at the border Canada has lost track of an estimated 70 trucks full of actual meat products selected for inspection in the last few months.

In the wake of the news of a Listeriosis outbreak at Maple Leaf Foods I observed in a 2008 commentary that it was likely that governments would bring in a whole new set of rules, claim it was thus doing something about food safety, yet most of those rules would actually have almost nothing to do with producing safer food.  I went on to predict that a goodly number of those rules would hit small, local processors the hardest, when ironically they have not been the source of most problems.

A little while ago I was reminded of a comment I made from the audience at a public meeting held in Keady in the wake of the announcement of a single case of BSE in May of 2003.  At that meeting I used an analogy to express my concern that government and most of the farm leadership at the time was just not seeing the big picture when it came to Canada’s beef sector.  I stated that beef farmers were on a train speeding towards a bridge over a ravine and that bridge was out.  BSE had come along and knocked the Read the rest of this post...

Many people are only now becoming familiar with a website called Facebook, due to the more than 200,000 Canadians who have joined a group protesting Stephen Harper’s decision to knock off work for several months by proroguing Parliament.

It looks like the Grey-Bruce Farmers Week was another outstanding success.  On the days I was there, attendance seemed very strong and the discussion and information lively and interesting.

I am starting to think that farmers have chosen the wrong profession in terms of economic return.  So too for factory workers, small business owners, store clerks, or just about anyone who lives pay cheque to pay cheque or has to create their own income.  I am also starting to wonder what it will take for those of us who do the wealth creation in this country to get off our duffs and actually stand up and do something about the way Canada is evolving (if I can use such a word).

The switch between the old year and the new one is traditionally a time when we look back on what has happened and then look forward to see what we might do to better handle some of those things.  In that vein I offer 5 resolutions, in no particular order, that government, farmers, and eaters might do to improve the way our food system works and how we might better support those who grow our food.

In a hotel room in Guelph, hearings have been going on that will define the future of pork production in Ontario.  If the history of other jurisdictions is any indication, than if the appeal of an ill-conceived decision by the Farm Products Marketing Commission is not upheld then we could very well see the final nail in the coffin of independent family farm pork production in Ontario.

This year’s Annual Convention of the National Farmers Union was a resounding success.  The attendance was one of the highest in recent memory and certainly the largest I personally have witnessed.  The attendance both during the convention, but certainly during the public event on the Thursday evening was so large hotel staff needed to find more and more chairs, filling the hall to near bursting.
